“What?” Kim spluttered.

Amber fumbled with something, then brought up a hyper wrench.

It was attached to the side of the plating. He simply hadn’t seen it.

He felt like an idiot.

She placed the wrench down.

Hydranx was looking at her the entire time. So was the rest of the engineering detail. Because, to be fair, there was no reason for a high-ranking officer like Kim to interrupt her.

He went to turn.

He quickly turned back. He hadn’t seen her all week.

He wanted to… what, debrief? He couldn’t pretend that he needed to tell her what was going on with his armor, because ever since that day, Wrigley hadn’t relied on her again.

And as Kim stood there thinking of all of this, he remained exactly where he was, looking progressively more foolish.

“Is there something we can do to help you, Commander?” Hydranx asked.

He did not have the best tone, suffice to say.

“I just need to—” Kim began.

He was looking at Amber the exact moment when her brows compressed with an almighty twitch.

It was a very specific movement. One he should not see on someone like her. It was one that indicated an incoming neurological communication. To be fair, that was a bit of a leap. Human faces moved about all the time. People could be in their own world, thinking their own things, and their faces could react to that internal dialogue.

There was no reason to assume that what happened to her now was related to a neurological communication but, but at the same time, it took too long for Kim to shake the impression that it somehow was.

Amber leaped up.

Kim had to admit that she was pretty good on her feet. She had this certain grace about her.

“I have not relieved you—” Hydranx began.

“Sorry, I just got a message,” she said quickly.

She didn’t look at Kim the entire time.

“Unless—” Hydranx’s wristwatch beeped.

He yanked it up.

Judging by the way his lips twitched, it made it clear that he’d just got a message that confirmed that, yeah, Sarah had been relieved, after all.

Kim couldn’t believe his luck.

But Amber wasn’t here to converse with him, clearly.

She rushed past him. She kept her eyes on him, though. He shouldn’t have to tell you that he kept his eyes on her, too.

The last week had made him forget just how intensely he’d stared at her during that session with Wrigley.

Now it was as if there’d been no intervening time whatsoever. All of the crazy missions he’d been on were simply wiped away until it was just him and her passing like two ships in the night.

Sorry, wrong saying, right?

The whole point of two ships passing in the night is they don’t meet.

The whole point of this interaction was that it was just him and her. The rest of the station could explode. Everything could break away. The Edge aliens could appear, and the invasion could start.

But nothing would detract from her presence or the way it made him feel.

He wasn’t being romantic here, but his skin sure did start to tingle.
